Everything Is Possible 

The other day I was reading a very interesting article about a shark attack that took place in 1916. It happened along the northeastern coast of the United States and involved a great white shark that was terrorizing the beaches of New Sweater. Now everyone knows and accepts that a shark is a creature of the sea and needs salt water to survive. 

So no one thought a shark could attack them in fresh water, but that's exactly what happened later that year. This particular shark stayed close to shore and eventually swam upstream around Raritan Bay, attacking a couple of upstream swimmers. Shortly before the attacks occurred, a retired sea captain named Thomas Cottrell saw this shark swimming upstream as he crossed a bridge. He couldn't believe his eyes, but got into his boat and sounded the alarm. No wonder no one believed him. “A shark in a river? Come on, be realistic, it's not possible. " 

But you know what? Incredible as it might seem, there was a shark in the river, and anyone who hadn't heeded the warnings was in danger of being attacked. Eventually, this shark killed two people. The first victim was a teenager who may or may not have heeded Cottrell's warning. Shortly after this attack, another man jumped into the water to search for the victim, despite being told there was a shark in the water. He too was attacked and died from severe blood loss. As I read this, I couldn't help but think about 9/11 and see the parallels between these two stories. Asked by the US Congress and the media as to why the "clues" that should have been collected were ignored, the FBI and CIA chiefs, as well as members of the Bush administration, replied: "We don't think they would use airplanes, like missiles ". 

If the FBI and CIA believed that something similar to what happened on 9/11 was possible, they could have put in place measures that likely would have prevented that from happening. But they didn't, even though the kidnappers left dozens of "clues". Likewise, if swimmers on the east coast of the United States had believed Captain Cottrell when he told them there was a shark in the river, chances are the shark wouldn't have killed anyone that day. But because they believed it was "impossible" to find a shark in fresh water, they completely ignored the warning, just as US law enforcement did, resulting in many paying with their lives. 

On the other hand, there are human beings who have overcome extraordinary adversities and accomplished great deeds. Every day we hear stories of people who have been told by so-called "experts" that they didn't have what they needed, but they made it regardless. The lesson here is that anything is possible, both for good and for bad. Believing or not believing in something does not mean that you will not be influenced by what happens. But it does mean that based on what you believe, you can take some action that can save you from something terrible or get you out of a terrible situation. Many of us find ourselves in dire situations, including poverty, unhappiness, debt, etc. 

Those of us who changed our situation did it because we believed we could do it. Those who don't believe they can change their situation, otherwise they would have done something about it, right? How many opportunities have you missed just because you thought it wouldn't work or wasn't possible? Think about what you could do if you believed you could do anything, even make your dreams come true. 

What a great talent you have that you haven't done anything about, because you probably thought you couldn't do it. I hope I have shown you through this short article that anything is possible. And that only by believing "I can" your battle is already half won.
